Abstract: This book provides assessments of the impacts, vulnerabilities and adaptation needs for the key economic and ecological sectors of India. The four key contributions of the book are: (1) the use of formal assessment tools under developing country contexts; (2) the articulation and quantification of climate change and emissions scenarios for India; (3) the consistency of assessments vis-à-vis future climate change projections; and (4) the focus on development for delineating conclusions and tasks. There are 12 separately authored chapters entitled: climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation: the context; tools for vulnerability assessment and adaptation; future climate scenarios; greenhouse gas emission scenarios; impacts of climate change on agriculture; vulnerability and adaptation to climate change in the forest sector; climate change impacts on natural ecosystems; climate change impacts on infrastructure and energy systems; impacts of climate change on coastal zones; impact of climate change on health: a case study of malaria in India; and vulnerability and adaptation: challenges ahead. This book will be of interest to policy makers and modellers engaged in impact assessment, global environmental assessment programmes and development experts. |
