In Fragile Dominion, ecologist Simon Levin addresses the question of whether the Earth’s biosphere will likely continue to support humans in the face of rapid human induced change—a large and important question indeed. Environmentalists have raisedthe concern that the scale of human actions has now gotten so large that it threatens to overwhelm the biosphere’s life support systems. They point to such environmental problems as global climate change, loss of habitat and species extinction, collapse of fisheries from over harvesting, loss of fertile topsoil, and access to clean water as evidence of stress. |
