The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) funded a collaborative project with the Indian Ministry of the Environment and Forests (MoEF) undertook a three year project on the effects of climate change in India. With the Indian Institute of Science (IIS) a project case study on the Central Himalayas, based on climate change models from the Hadley Centre Regional Models (HadRM3H) using the A2 (medium high) and B2 (medium-low) emissions scenarios. In the medium term communities will benefit from increased Net Primary Production (NPP) increasing fuel wood and timber supply. In the long term however, forest dieback and loss of biodiversity will negatively impact local communities and economies depending on these resources.
